Cliché, but.. Driving distance?

I got a new laser rangefinder from my dad, and we discovered that the most fun (after realizing how little ACTUALLY KNOWING the right distance helps our scores) was to get driving distances with it.

Any chance we could get Club + Distance with each hole, perhaps optionally?

I mark my scorecard today with "D 230" or "8I 132".

Also, wrt driving distance, does the PGA stat only track this measure on Par 4s and 5s, and are dogleg layups, etc, considered?  Anyone know this?  smile

Beautiful app, btw.  I'll be licensing it shortly, I'm sure.

It's unlikely. Distance you hit your clubs changes every day (depending on conditions) and really has little effect on scores. Furthermore, most people exaggerate, so we don't really want to encourage lying.

Scorecard must always strike a balance between being fast (to enter your stats) and resourceful (showing a lot of stats). I don't think club distances fit within the balance we seek to provide.

From: http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/current/101.html

The average number of yards per measured drive. These drives are measured on two holes per round. Care is taken to select two holes which face in opposite directions to counteract the effect of wind. Drives are measured to the point at which they come to rest regardless of whether they are in the fairway or not. (101)

Re: Cliché, but.. Driving distance?

I am testing your software and agree that drive distance would be a nice feature.  I have GPS so I get accurate drive distance (so no lying) and although it is probably irrelevant, it is fun to know how far my farthest drive (in the desert with 80 mph winds)  went.  I don't see the harm in making the statistic available...the same way you have first putt as an available stat.  I play a lot of golf and don't have the means of measureing THAT statistic (would make my scorecard unreadable).
I know it is a development issue, but it shouldn't be THAT hard to do.

It's not about how hard it would be to add from a development or coding standpoint.

Unlike first putt distance (I fit all of my stats in two boxes on scorecards - it'll fit just fine and you only need to approximate), driving distance is largely irrelevant and cannot be used in any other stat beyond "driving distance."

If we were to include driving distance, it will take people longer to keep their stats on the course and longer to transcribe the stats when they get back. We need to strike a balance between asking for as few stats as possible (five) while generating as many (35 or so) stats as possible. Adding driving distance would add 20% more at the "type your stats in" step while adding only 1 more statistic to the 35 or so we calculate. It's not worth it.

Besides, as I believe I've said before, driving distance is largely irrelevant to scoring.

If you have questions about how I write my stats down so that my scorecard is not unreadable, check out the PDF manual that comes with Scorecard (even the demo).
